tokana's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Movies I’m under a lot of stress. I’ve been in a semi-cranky mood for about a week. But instead of bringing everyone down with my crankiness and the details of it I’m going to talk about happier topics. Movies. ~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~ I tried to watch it last night. I turned it off about half way through. I wasn’t too impressed. It seemed too much like Se7en to me. But even worse I knew it would give me nightmares if I watched it before bed. Allow me to expand on this point. I love scary movies. I love psychological thrillers that make me jump and screen. Typically no matter how bad the consistency or special effects I can get into these things (Hide&Seek was an exception). I thought The Others was great the first time around because it didn’t have anything yucky or gross, all of the scary parts where the result of your own mind. That is awesome to me and way harder to accomplish than blood and gore scares. Alas, I am just like everyone else though. When some demented thing is shown, something gross and disgusting I can’t look away. When Dr. Lecter starts eating the guys brains in Hannibal or when Jesus’s back is ripped apart in The Passion I can’t help but watch. On both of these occasions I had to leave the theatre for fear of barfing, but when I returned what did I do? I kept watching… Back in 2000 I watched Strangeland late at night with some friends and I still have nightmares about it. I’m just sensitive to gore and demented situations. I think I’m to sympathetic… Anyhow. Back to Saw. Obviously you can tell from the preview that there could be some nastiness. Well as far as I saw it didn’t come from the Saw – it came from other various torture devices the villain made. After and hour I was over it. I stopped the movie and read a book for a few minutes to get the images out of my head and went to bed. It worked. I had good dreams. But now I’m curious. Where does the Saw come in? Do they catch him? So now I think I’ll have to try and watch the other half during the day when I have plenty of daylight hours left to get any images out of my head… If you’ve seen it already, E-mail Me and let me know if I shouldn’t bother. ~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~ I really liked the old Willy Wonka. I used to know all the songs. So when I saw the ads for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory I was excited. Even though I’m not a big Johnny Depp fan I went in with no bias. I must say I wasn’t impressed or disappointed. I think they did a decent job. The oompa loopma’s sucked! I mean they were all just one Indian guy they graphically cloned. And while their lyrics may have been more creative they just weren’t as catchy to me. Not to mention part of the fun of them was the mystery. In the new one they spend 10 minutes explaining their origins. If you want to compare the lyrics I found a great place to do so. My overall review – it’s worth seeing but not at theatre prices. Wait for the DVD. ~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~ Flight of the Navigator is set to arrive on Thursday! I loved this movie when I was a kid. John and I used to watch it once a week or so. We were prompted to NetFlix it recently when John finally realized what Frankie’s laugh reminds him of. The laugh of Max (the space ship) in the movie! When John said it I knew he was exactly right. So now we have to watch it just for comparison’s sake if not for nostalgia. ~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~ We’re watching tomorrow night at ANTi. Looks to be a decent sized group. I’m excited. I haven’t watched this in a while so it will be pseudo new to me too. ~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~|~ Okay. That’s all for now. P.S. – my cat is so cool :-) 1:30 p.m. - July 27, 2005 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
