tokana's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Red Light PickUp I can’t believe I forgot to share this story. Saturday, C worked so, naturally I shopped. Won’t get into details but I ended up at several different malls and all over town. It was a beautiful day and I had the windows down, music blaring. I was on my way home, it’s like 4:30, and I had Sheryl Crow on and I’m singing and bopping along. I pull into the left turn lane, the light is green and there is a decent gap in traffic, but the car in front of me doesn’t go for it. I interrupt my tunes to say “Aw, you coulda made it!” and then go back to singing along with Soak up the Sun. Right at that moment my gaze lands on the car’s side-view mirror. The driver, a twenty-something guy, is looking at me. In response to my (evidentially) loud comment he smiles and nods. Oops! The turn signal lights up and he finally goes and I follow behind him. Next light is red and he pulls up beside me. He yells over my music ”It’s pretty dangerous to criticize other people’s driving when you’re singing like that with your windows down!” Oh boy. So I turn down the music a smidge and say back Why, are you gonna criticize my singing now? Light changes and we both go. Next light he goes for it again. I’ll agree to a truce if you’ll come join me for an early dinner over in the Village. What a line. I told him I was flattered but I was on my way home to cook dinner for my man. In parting he said he’s a lucky guy and pulled into the right turn lane and drove away. That is easily the most unique pickup I have ever personally experienced. With John being single and going through the whole asking out, confidence, rejection thing I can appreciate the originality and guts even more. 5:23 p.m. - April 12, 2005 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
