tokana's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Cats and Kids I’ve never really understood people who speak of their pets as if they were people – or even worse, their children! I am here to admit, I have been converted. Never having had any pets bigger than mice (yes, mice) I wasn’t sure what to expect when C and I decided we were ready to take the plunge and add a cat to our home. So when we brought Roger home I was as skittish as he was. But after getting to know him and adjusting to what is (running around the room at top speed at midnight) and isn’t (constantly shaking head to get rid of ear infection – poor thing) normal for the little guy – I’ve relaxed considerably. Roger is part of our family now. He has his own personality and moods. I often find myself having conversations with him and I swear he answers back with his body language. I will even confess that in many ways, having a young cat is like having a baby. I’m constantly having to cat-proof things and it is hard to sit down and relax since he’s constantly wanting to play fetch or tug (he has a split personality – about half the time he’s Roger the Cat, the other half he thinks he’s Doger the Dog). Just like a kid, he picks up on the mood in the house; if C and I are cuddling in front of a movie Roger will come and cuddle too, if C and I are stressed out and the mood is tense, Roger makes himself scarce, if C and I are laughing and joking, Roger will want to play. He’s a lot smarter than I thought he would be. Like just now, I’m saying all these good things about the little guy…I reach over to pet him. He nuzzles me, starts licking my hand, lays his head against me and starts to fall asleep. I slowly sneak my hand out and he totally switches gears and starts gnawing on my hand and arm playing with me – it’s like he’s saying “nice try, I’m not done with you yet!” So, I can now understand all those people I previously pegged as “weird”. I too have an animal as a member of my family. I just posted more pictures of Roger Doger here if you’re interested. Oh boy, he just dropped the feather on my lap, I guess I have to go play now. :o) 5:09 p.m. - January 16, 2005 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
